Scat: Light to dark brown, sometimes with white nitrogenous covering. Content includes buds, berries, and sawdust. In winter, deposited in snow nest in large mass of fifty or so scats. May be scattered if roosting in trees.

Habitat: Mixed deciduous woodlands with dense understory. Prefers aspen groves.

Similar species: Tracks larger than bobwhite. Differs from other forest birds by wide, robust toe size and short toe 1. Grouse trails can be differentiated from those of other forest birds by the short stride.

Other sign: Burrow under the snow to roost. Round nests, usually 5.0 inches (12.5 cm) in diameter, made from leaves and brush. Dust baths in sandy areas.
